Description
Erode Virali Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
The Erode Virali Turmeric, named for its finger-like appearance, stands out as a heritage crop with a distinct identity. Its significance was officially recognized in 2019 when it received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, highlighting its unique origin and characteristics.
Origin
This variety is native to the Erode and Coimbatore districts in Tamil Nadu, regions known for their rich agricultural tradition and specialized turmeric cultivation.
Phytochemical Profile
Erode Virali Turmeric contains 3.8% to 4.2% curcumin. Although this is slightly lower than the Salem variety, it is highly valued for its exceptional “Curing Percentage,” which refers to the amount of weight retained after drying—a key factor in commercial turmeric processing.
Unique Properties
The variety is easily recognizable by its vibrant golden-yellow color. Its rhizomes are shorter and slightly bent, distinguishing them from the longer, thicker fingers of Salem turmeric. Another notable feature is its resistance to pests during storage, making it a reliable choice for both farmers and traders.
Cultivation & Season
Erode Virali Turmeric is typically cultivated using organic mulching techniques. It responds particularly well to the “Pit System” or “Raised Bed” methods, which support healthy root development and minimize waterlogging.
Sowing occurs in June or July, and the crop has a medium-to-long growing period, ranging from approximately 240 to 270 days before harvest. This extended duration allows the turmeric to fully develop its characteristic color and properties.
