Description
Black Moong Dal (Whole Black Moong / Kari Hesaru Kaalu) is a heritage strain of Vigna radiata, valued for its resilience and nutritional richness. Unlike the more common green moong, this native variety has a distinctive black seed coat with a green interior and matures at a slower pace, making it particularly suited for organic and traditional farming systems.
🌱 Seed Propagation & Cultivation
Resilient crop: Adapted to local conditions, making it ideal for small-scale and organic farmers.
🌍 Origin & Authenticity
This rare variety is cultivated by farmer cooperatives in Belagavi and Gadag, and carefully sourced from an organic farming family in Belagavi. Its authenticity and nutrient profile make it a prized addition to heirloom seed collections
Sowing: Seeds are typically sown directly into well-prepared soil during the kharif season (monsoon) or rabi season (winter), depending on regional climate.
Germination: With proper moisture, seeds germinate within 2-3 days. The black seed coat protects the embryo, ensuring strong sprouting even under variable conditions.
Spacing: Farmers usually maintain 30–45 cm row spacing to allow adequate aeration and root development.
Growth cycle: This heirloom strain matures more slowly than commercial hybrids, but the extended growth period enhances nutrient density and flavor.
Soil & Climate: Thrives in loamy soils with good drainage and moderate rainfall. Being a legume, it fixes nitrogen, enriching soil fertility for subsequent crops.
Harvesting: Pods are harvested once they turn brown and dry. Seeds retain their black coat but reveal a green interior when split.
🌾 Distinct Features
- Unpolished & natural: Unlike polished pulses, these seeds are left in their natural state, preserving fiber and antioxidants.
- Rich in anthocyanins: The black coat is packed with antioxidants, contributing to its health benefits.
