A Living Pharmacy for Your Garden

Neela Nochi is a fast-growing aromatic shrub with distinctive five-fingered compound leaves and clusters of beautiful purplish-blue flowers. In the wild, it grows along riverbanks, wastelands, and dry deciduous forests across India. In your garden, it becomes a compact, multi-stemmed medicinal bush that starts flowering within 8–10 months of transplanting.

Every part of this plant has documented medicinal value — leaves for pain and respiratory relief, roots for bronchitis, seeds for skin ailments, and the essential oil as a natural insect repellent. In Tamil Nadu, village elders still use Nochi leaf steam baths (ஆவி பிடித்தல்) as the first line of treatment for sinus congestion and headaches.

Beyond medicine, Nochi serves as a natural pest deterrent in organic farming. At Rangamalai, we grow it as a companion border plant around our vegetable beds — its aromatic leaves repel whiteflies, aphids, and stored-grain pests.

Traditional Medicinal Uses

Classified in Charaka Samhita under Vishaghna (anti-toxic) and Krimighna (anti-parasitic) groups. In Siddha medicine, Nochi is a cornerstone herb prescribed for Vata and Kapha imbalances.

🫁 Respiratory Relief

Leaf steam inhalation for sinus, cold, cough, asthma, and bronchial congestion. Root decoction used for chronic bronchitis in Siddha practice.

🦴 Joint & Muscle Pain

Warmed leaves applied as poultice for arthritis, sprains, and rheumatic swelling. Leaf oil massage for chronic joint stiffness — widely used in village physiotherapy.

🤕 Headache & Fever

Crushed leaf paste applied to the forehead for migraines. Leaf decoction with pepper given for intermittent fevers — a traditional Tamil household remedy.

🧴 Skin & Wound Care

Leaf extract wash for infected ulcers, boils, and fungal skin conditions. Seeds used in traditional formulations for chronic skin diseases.

🦟 Natural Pest Repellent

Dried leaves placed in grain storage to repel weevils. Leaf smoke used to drive away mosquitoes — the original organic mosquito coil.

🛡️ Liver & Immunity Support

Seed extracts have shown hepato-protective properties. The plant's potent antioxidant compounds support general immunity when consumed as a decoction.

Ideal Conditions for Neela Nochi

This is one of the most forgiving medicinal plants you can grow. It thrives in poor soil, tolerates drought once established, and can handle both tropical heat and moderate cold. Perfect for beginners.

🌍
Climate Zones Tropical and subtropical India. Grows naturally from coastal Tamil Nadu to the lower Himalayas (up to 1,500 m). Suitable for all Indian states.
🪨
Soil Type Highly adaptable — thrives in sandy loam, red laterite, and even poor rocky soil. Prefers well-drained conditions. Doesn't need rich compost.
☀️
Sunlight Full sun (6+ hours) is ideal. Tolerates partial shade but may flower less. An open terrace, balcony edge, or garden boundary works well.
💧
Watering Moderate watering during establishment. Once rooted (4–6 weeks), it is highly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged soil — root rot is the only real risk.
📐
Spacing Space 3–4 feet apart if planting as a hedge row. In a pot, use a minimum 12-inch diameter container with drainage holes.
✂️
Pruning Prune after flowering season to encourage bushy growth. Can be maintained at 3–4 ft height with regular cutting — the pruned leaves are themselves medicine.

Your First 7 Days — Care Instructions

Live plants travel stressed. Follow this timeline to help your Nochi settle into its new home.

Day 0 — Unboxing
Open the parcel immediately upon delivery. Remove the plastic wrap and moist coir packing. If leaves look wilted, don't panic — this is transit stress, not death. Water the root ball gently and place the plant in a shaded spot (no direct sun).
Day 1–2 — Recovery Shade
Keep in dappled light or under a tree canopy. Water once daily, early morning. Do NOT repot yet. Let the plant recover from transit shock in its nursery bag or original container.
Day 3–4 — Transplanting
Prepare a pit (12" × 12") or a large pot with loose, well-drained soil. Mix some vermicompost or aged cow dung (no chemical fertilizer). Transplant gently without disturbing the root ball. Water deeply after planting. Apply a thin mulch of dried leaves around the base.
Day 5–7 — Gradual Sun Exposure
Start moving to morning sun (2–3 hours), increasing daily. By day 7, the plant can handle full sun. If some lower leaves yellow and drop, this is normal — the plant is redirecting energy to new roots. New leaf buds at the tip = success.
Week 2 onward — Settled
Water every 2–3 days (daily in peak summer). No fertilizer for the first 3 weeks. After that, a handful of neem cake or vermicompost once a month is sufficient. Expect visible new growth within 2–3 weeks of transplanting.
1 🌱 Live plant in nursery bag with intact root ball
2 💧 Roots wrapped in wet coir fibre + damp newspaper
3 🧻 Stem padded with tissue to prevent breakage
4 📦 Ventilated corrugated box with air holes
