Description

Twenty-five hand-shaped, sun-dried cow dung cakes made from the dung of our own free-grazing Kangayam cattle — the native breed of the Kongu belt — pressed by hand at Rangamalai Organic Farms and dried under the Karur sun until they light clean and burn slow.

If you perform Agnihotra at sunrise and sunset, you already know that the fire is only as good as what you feed it. Most dung cakes sold today come from dairy sheds, mixed with straw, husk or paper pulp, and oven-dried in a hurry. They smoulder, they spit, they leave sticky ash. Ours are single-ingredient: dung, hand, sun. Nothing else goes in.

Why Kangayam dung is different

Our cattle are not stall-fed. They graze open pasture on the farm — native grasses, tree fodder, crop residue from our own poison-free fields. No growth boosters, no chemical feed, no antibiotics in routine use. Dung from a free-grazing native cow is fibrous and dry to begin with, which is precisely why it holds shape without binders and takes a steady, low, smoky flame instead of a fast one.

Kangayam is a draught breed bred for centuries in this exact region — Karur, Erode, Tiruppur. Buying these cakes puts a small, direct return into keeping that breed grazing on working land. காங்கேயம் மாட்டுச் சாணி வறட்டி — நம் மண்ணின் மாடு, நம் மண்ணின் நெருப்பு.

Made the slow way

  1. Collected fresh, dailyDung is gathered the same morning from the grazing yard, while it is still workable.
  2. Hand-shaped, no fillerPressed into even discs by hand. No straw, no sawdust, no husk, no paper — fillers are what make a cake crackle and stink.
  3. Sun-dried 7–10 daysTurned by hand each day on open racks until dry all the way through. Slow drying is what gives a clean, smooth burn.
  4. Sorted and packedBroken and under-dried pieces are pulled out before packing, so what reaches you is ready to light.
Sunrise homa Lights in under a minute Smear a little ghee on one piece and it takes flame directly — no kerosene, no camphor crutch.
Sunset homa Burns 12–15 minutes Long enough to carry the full offering without needing to be re-fed mid-ritual.

How to use it

For Agnihotra

Break 2–3 cakes into pieces and arrange them in your copper pyramid, leaving air gaps. Smear a thin layer of cow ghee on the topmost piece and light it at the prescribed sunrise or sunset moment for your location. One pack of 25 typically covers 4–6 days of twice-daily practice.

Beyond the fire

Homa & havan

Works equally well for Ganapati homa, Navagraha homa, Dhanvantari homa and daily deepa-dhoopa in the pooja room.

Garden ash

The leftover ash is rich in potash. Traditionally worked into potting mix and around the root zone of vegetables and fruit trees.

Seed and soil

Cow dung ash is a classic ingredient in beejamrutham-style seed treatment and in dry dusting for the kitchen garden.

Evening dhoopam

A smouldering piece with a pinch of sambrani or neem leaf is the old household way of scenting a courtyard at dusk.

Common questions

Is this the same as the varati / sanaki sold locally?

Same traditional item — வறட்டி in Tamil, kande or uple elsewhere. The difference is the source and the making: single-breed native cow dung, no fillers, and open sun-drying rather than fast drying.

Will it smell inside the house?

Properly sun-dried dung has almost no raw odour, and burns with the familiar woody-sweet homa smoke rather than an acrid one. Light it in a ventilated space as you would any sacred fire.

How many cakes will I need per month?

Twice-daily Agnihotra uses roughly 4–6 cakes a day, so a practitioner typically needs 4–6 packs a month. Occasional homa or pooja use will make one pack last much longer.

Do the cakes arrive broken?

Dung cakes are naturally brittle. We pack them with care, but a few edge chips in transit are normal and do not affect burning — broken pieces are in fact easier to arrange in a pyramid.

Do you supply larger quantities for temples or regular practitioners?

Yes. Write to us on WhatsApp at +91-8660974096 for bulk packs and repeat-supply arrangements.

Sold as a traditional ritual and garden product. Descriptions of use reflect long-standing traditional practice and are not medical or therapeutic claims.
