Salem Native Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
• The “Salem Local” is the workhorse of the Indian turmeric industry, prized for its robust growth and reliability.
• Origin: Salem District, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most widely cultivated native varieties in South India.
• Curcumin Content: 4.5% to 5.2%. It sits in the “High-Curcumin” bracket for commercial varieties.
• Unique Properties: The rhizomes are notably longer and thicker (often exceeding 4 cm) compared to Erode varieties. It has a bright, deep-orange core and a very pungent, earthy aroma.
• Cultivation & Season: * Method: Thrives in well-drained red or clay loam soils. Farmers typically use the “Ridge and Furrow” method to prevent waterlogging.
• Season: Sown during the pre-monsoon showers (May–June). It is a long-duration crop, requiring 8 to 9 months (harvested Jan–Feb).
