Adukku Nel (அடுக்கு நெல்) is a celebrated traditional heirloom paddy variety from Tamil Nadu, historically documented in ancient Pallu literature. Its name literally translates to “stacked paddy,” referring to how the grains are tightly layered and clustered sequentially on the panicle. It is visually striking in the field and highly valued for its dense nutritional profile.

As a tall, traditional landrace, Adukku Nel produces massive amounts of biomass. While its height makes it prone to lodging under heavy winds or excessive moisture near harvest, the sheer volume of straw generated is an incredible asset for permaculture systems. It serves as excellent deep mulch for soil moisture retention or as premium cattle fodder.

It thrives in rainfed, natural farming systems. It responds beautifully to organic inputs like Jivamrutham or Panchagavya, whereas synthetic nitrogen often exacerbates its tendency to lodge by causing rapid, weak stem elongation.
