Description
Rakthasali is a red rice variety traditionally grown across the northern parts of Kerala. Once on the verge of extinction, it is prized in Ayurveda as a medicinal rice, used to restore the body’s natural balance. It is valued for purifying the blood and building immunity, owing to its high zinc content, and is traditionally recommended for lactating mothers. Rakthasali is also rich in iron, potassium, and dietary fibre. Its potassium content in the raw grain is 202.38 mg/100g — nearly double the 108 mg/100g recorded for ordinary raw rice (IFCT, 2017). Studies have further found Rakthasali to be high in protein, crude lipids, and insoluble dietary fibre, making it nutritionally superior to common rice varieties.
